The Creator and the Creation

He created it as evolving and autonomous. So far, it seems He has not changed His mind. The Indian traditions see the God actually descending to the Earth to enforce His will. He does so by becoming a part of the Creation rather than by tampering His creation. It confirms that He respects the autonomy He has granted to His creation.

Capitalism

Capitalism is a name (as a term and specific conceptual category) because it emerged as a novelty in Europe following the Reformation and the Renaissance. Even at its earlier stage, they couldn’t differentiate between plunder, piracy, human trafficking and trade. The fact is that there is nothing Western about capitalism. Both market and capitalism are very natural outgrowth of human agency. Capitalism has ever existed in more civilized regions of the world and naturally without a name.

The ‘Secular’ State and the Light of Wisdom

If we qualify the term ‘state’ by putting the adjective ‘secular’ before it, the adjective is totally superfluous. State by itself is a secular entity. It is the product of secularism and it invariably espouses secularism. The crux of secularism is that the state is the most powerful of institutions, and with the rise of secularism, it had superseded its contender, i.e. religion as the supreme power. But the fact remains; theology continues to define the nature of every state, communist states included. They were a cult of godlessness.

In other words, the states do not have the sway, particularly in its internal matters, which it should been having as the supreme authority as religion continues to guide the morals of the people. But they differ in extent. The State ideally is the home of homo economicus. A real secular soil is where market is free and fair. Only place where market relations supersede others in the public relations is really secular.

As per the Dharmic norms, secularism is again superfluous. Dharma in our context is the supreme and governs both the morals and the market. We need to imbibe the Dharma of knowledge and the knowledge of Dharma. We the genetically enlightened people of the world must undo the genetic modification in order to show the world the light of the wisdom.

Enlightened Self Interest

Mostly a middle class person is a spokesperson for the poor - a notional poor. Ironically, the so called poor knows what is good for them, but a middle class person doesn't. It would have been better if every status group were speaking for themselves instead of speaking for the others. Generally, they don't have expertise and they speak their own misconceptions and prejudices, and while doing so they inadvertently drown the genuine voices. You need to support voices coming from the sufferers or you can speak for the sake of who don't have their own voices, but for that you need to have authentic information about them. Moral of the story is that you speak what you know the best. And it's mostly you yourself. An enlightened pursuance of self-interest is the best thing you can do for the good of your polity and the humanity.

Political Science

  • Mankind claimed property to escape the savagery of their wild existence.
  • They devised the state to protect themselves from the savages.
  • Then they needed to protect their property from the state.
  • And they came out with the idea of constitutionalism.
  • The effective right to property is the core of constitutionalism.
  • The science enables you to know this and makes you to demand and have what you deserve.

"A ruler with a contiguous territory is a rival." - Chanakya

Our pundits of international politics say that a country cannot choose its neighbours and the message thus they have is that we should make all possible efforts to make our neighbours friendly. This is an absolutely wrong policy. Friendly postures and undue concessions are hardly valued in international politics. Nations try to appease only a power which is capable and inclined to threaten them or to inflict damages on them.

Secondly, if you cannot change geography, so you cannot change history. What Chanakya has observed is the logical basic but we face threats and aggressions much deeper and more complicated by their nature. We are treated as a naturally subservient civilization, which every other is seeking to subdue. This is our history and this is the present scenario. Our rise as a powerful and prosperous nation is the most anathematic thing to happen for them.

From the day one, India should  have done everything not only to fortify its borders but also to develop global striking capabilities. For some strange reasons, the single most crucial and critical lesson of our entire history was totally ignored from the very start. Some would say very foolishly that India as a poor nation would not have afforded this. How to leverage armed forces, war machine and military industry for economic gains should have been a simple economics for a big nation like India. India also allowed the massive military experiences it had gained during the two great wars to go totally wasted.

We want peace and our efforts in order to be effective must be global. But for that we need the greatest war machine ever created. One should also know that this would be the accomplishment of only brains. We must do everything to nurse the great minds.

The Freedom Upsurge

What Colin Crouch calls post-democracy and post-post democracy are in fact taking place simultaneously. Democratic institutions are growingly becoming non-functional or dysfunctional, but indiviudal freedom is gaining ground.

Here, however I wish to make a different point. What I see happening is the streamlining of democracy as many of the services for which we needed democracy earlier have been or are being taken over by the market for good.

Secondly, the widely expanded scope of freedom as a result of globalisation, liberalisation and new technologies have to sink in systems, which have to be global and more intricate.

Right now what we see is the unsettling of institutions and systems, which are simply incapable of handling the new democratic upsurge, and its vicious opposition by the entrenched interests.

Military Industry

We as a nation must strive to make the world a peaceful place. But if they cannot avoid warring or fighting, they must procure their arms and armaments from India. Arms and armaments make a big business and we must have more than our fair share. I support India's push for military industry.

Busying in Business

We must do everything and must mobilize everything in order to make India the best place in terms of doing business. When Indians would primarily do business, most of the negativities, which imperil our life, would vanish away. As being in legitimate businesses is difficult, people indulge in dysfunctional activities. It is our material poverty, which engenders our intellectual and moral poverty. Persistence of poverty has disabled most of the Indians to think positively.

The World of Education

We must try to make India the world of education. We must make our education system such that If any person thinks of education anywhere in the world, s/he first thinks of India. Not the hub of world class education but the world of education, we must strive to make India.

How can we do this? It's rather simple. We need to know our goals and means, and must not mess up them. Diversification of the responsibility for education through corporatization, cooperativization, autonomization and voluntarization would prepare the ground for the same.

Edcuction: the Humane Universe

Generally people perceive and pursue education in terms of instrumentality. That's a dimension of what we know as education. Mostly people don't realise that the education is their own human self. We evolve to our essential self through education, which is not external to us, but innate to our real self in the same way as the ability of speech is to us. The true education is the universe, which we constitute as human beings. The universe manifests both - the unfathomable real and the infinite potential of our existence as human beings.

Who is a secular person?

The conceptual categories of secularism and communalism are impositions to subvert the Indian politics. In the Sanatana Dharma, there has never been any contradiction between the temporal or the spiritual concerns.

If viewed from the Western parlance, and rightly so, homo economicus is the perfect secular person. Market alone is the secular place. The politics is meant to preserve the secularity.
The domain of the sacred in the West is separated.

In our case, the problem is not that an ecclesiastical authority dominates the temporal affairs to their detriment. Rather the problem is the politicization of the ethnic identities by the vested interests, and in this context there is hardly any difference between 'secularism' or 'communalism'.

Our homo economicus would be a moral rationalist as her/his mooring is in the Sanatana Dharma. We must allow him to be at her/his best. If someone restrains the homo economicus, he acts not only anti-secular, but also anti-sacred. By hampering the well being of a commoner, they are both anti-human and anti-God.

What is Dharma?

Let me tell, how does Dharma figure in my consciousness? And why should I say this?

Though the knowledge is well present in the public domain, and yet Dharma is used interchangeably as religion or mazhab or creed or like abstractions. The fact is that the consciousness as named dharma is diametrically opposed to the so categorised other phenomena. Dharma is not an order of faith but an evergoing quest of truth. While the others come into the domain of phenomenology, Dharma transcends even ontology. It's not only about the nature of being, it's also about the ever unfolding of being, and more crucially it's also the intensity of feelings which leads one to transcend from the state of being to that of beinglessness. I say this, so that the distinctness of Dharma, which is the raison d'etre of our being, does not get lost from the general perception.

In the domain of the physical base of our consciousness i.e. in terms of tangibility, Dharma is equated with the essence of a being, animate or inanimate, and its becoming of as per the essence, as opposite to its unbecoming. This is indeed Dharma, the tangible Dharma, and yet it's Dharma in its derivative form.

What is Dharma then? I present it as it is mapped in my consciousness. And while I do so, I move from the consciousness to the consciousness. Dharma is the neverending quest of itself. The consciousness is the pathway and is the destination too. It's the eternity in momentariness, which encompasses the end and the means, both seeing the other in itself, and that non-existent space of momentariness where the being and the nonbeing intermingle, come to us as the consciousness of Dharma. This trascedental reasoning informs our approaching of the immediate tangible being, and that makes our manifest dharma. This is the meaning of Dharma I have in my mind, and the very meaning demands me to find its meaning as my dharma. (I also request my friends to guide or accompany me in my quest)

Let me pray now -

Humanization of our Universities

If knowledge is deified, and those in the knowledge business behave like Messengers and high priests, the knowledge instead of remaining a source of liberation becomes imprisoning. And this has been the vital distinction between the system of knowledge, which we ever had in India and the ignorances which prevailed elsewhere. Knowledge there buttresses authority and leaves the society at its mercy, and then it tries to fend for some space for society. Our traditional knowledge creators mostly worked in the domain of public, and equipped society with usable knowledge. The whole Bhatkti movement, for instance, is in this order. Our universities unfortunately adopted the methods of the Roman (imperialist) Christianity and even the architectural designs of lecture rooms and conference halls resemble to that of the church. They pursue knowledge in authoritarian terms, and their ethos is not engagement but the opposite. Their ways reflect as if they are in occult, they preach instead of dialoguing, and demand unwavering faith from devotees. They are also divided into conflicting sects with followers in layered statues. Fealty and patronisation is the functionality of such sects, and there are secret codes for inclusion and exclusion.

All things were going just fine, but then globalization and liberalisation became the compulsion of reality and as they unfolded the society rediscovered itself. This also made the true trait of our universities to come out in open. They proved themselves not only laggards compared to societal advance but also acted very consciously to trammel the advance of society. And some even opted to destabilize things in place of stabilizing the social advance. This dysfunctionality testifies the rot.

I appeal for the humanization of our universities. They must descend down from their dilapidated towers, resume their innate humanity, and be one among the human beings in conversation with them. If heat and dust is too much troubling, be a brave heart to face the people on the social media atleast.

Universal Citizenship Allowance

The idea of a citizenship allowance has been there in my mind for quite a long time, and then the news came one day that the Swiss people turned down a similar proposal.

The need of such an allowance, which covers the basic necessities of a person, is not only justified but also unavoidable in times to come. Justified on many counts but I would put forth two. First, we the citizens of the country have equal claim to all the natural resources, which we have and are economically appropriated, and therefore, certain proportion of royalty must directly come to our kitty. Secondly, everyone's simple being is part of the national capital as s/he exists as a consumer and producer and since that capital is monetised as the national currency, a share of that value must accrue to each person directly also.

In future, such an allowance would be unavoidable as the automation and internet enabled services would make most of the jobs obsolete. Most of the people would be without a job and such an allowance would be a necessity.

At present, if the provision for the universal citizenship allowance is implemented, this instead of being a burden on public exchequer would in fact result in saving of a lot of public revenue and also there would be huge surplus. With this allowance, all the subsidies, artificial employment generation schemes and public funded services would not be needed, and moreover a universal regime of direct taxation could be implemented.

When every citizen is freed from the struggle for his/her earning basic necessities of life, we will see the rise of a empowered, responsible and creative citizenry. A universal citizenship allowance would be a more revolutionary democratic advance than adult suffrage.

Capitalist Dictatorship

Among different forms of dictatorship, one is capitalist dictatorship. The countries where such dictatorship exists, even natural water sources have been monopolised by the capitalists and people have no recourse to oppose them. But in these countries, democratic apparatuses also mutate into dictatorship so inconspicuously.

In India, if democracy flourishes, it's because of our civilizational values. It's floundering in its immediate neighbouring countries and mostly in the entire South. Even in the North, many countries have effectively resisted democratization. And wherever we have full fledged democracy, the powerful grip of vested interests like those of military-industrial complexes and big corporations cannot be mistaken. The values which sustain democracy in India have been the work of generations of seers, scholars, and litterateurs over millennia.

My point is to reassure my compatriots that capitalism in India would be of the most beneficent effect, which would make not only India but the whole world a far better place. It was our shreshthis who gave Buddha and Mahavira to the world. Let's adopt the way of overcoming our wants, and we will civilize the rest. We need not to fear depravation. We are Sanatanis.

However, we must not forget while propagating or living free market that personal security and fundamental freedoms must never be compromised. We must have a system by which every person in any state must be provided for food, water, clothing, shelter, education, medication, and protection from violence. A universal citizenship allowance directly deposited into each one's bank account would be the most appropriate thing.

Time for de-decentralization

In governance, the desirability of decentralization is passé. First, the technology has enabled us to cut the replication of efforts and streamline our services. Secondly, in the growingly globalized world, as a national economy, we must compete as a cohesive unit, as the multi-level regulations and interference would impede our competitiveness. We must have independent national regulators like RBI and SEBI to oversee the functioning of our commons. The Indian intelligentsia must raise their voice now, in unison, for reversing the earlier academic fetish for decentralization. This is the time for de-decentralization.

और गायब हो जाती है धरती;

For your Fair share of Future

What is happening globally is the last flares of the past. The future is soon going to overrun the past to irrelevance. Listen very carefully, my compatriots, when I say the following. The future generations will have only future, and no past. Every succeeding generation, barring those who are the prisoners of the bygone ages, has shrunken past. In future, it will shrink almost to nullity. The people who have smaller baggage would capture a greater share of the future. I urge you to be future ready and, future friendly for the sake of your children.

The 25th anniversary of (economic) freedom

It was in 1991 when the balance of payment crisis forced the then regime to embark on the path of economic reforms. This was the beginning of the end of the license-quota-permit-inspector raj. What I see today, despite measures having been undertaken half-heartedly and haltingly, that India and Indians are far better off than they had ever been in the last millennium (from the standards of their times). This is despite the fact that the effects of the reforms, though reforms being only half baked, have yet to manifest in a meaningful way. India commanded nearly a quarter of the global GDP during the pre-British days, but all the wealth were concentrated in the hands of the royalty, the nobility, traders and usurers.

At this time when the sea of knowledge can be accessed with the clicks of a mouse, a whole lot of people can know their worth, claim that and work on. Thanks to the reforms, many more Indians can afford to buy books too. Bygone are the days when their search for self-worth ended in the quagmire of the Soviet supplied literature.

When these reforms were announced I was studying at JNU and I felt immensely exhilarated seeing the prospects of a new era unfolding. Today I'm really very optimistic as I know that the reforms once set in course for a while set in its own momentum and now nobody can revert the process. .

At the middle of the 25th anniversary year of economic freedom (and hence that of substantive freedom), it's time we should know our worth. Now we can say that we are the people of substance and deserve to be the masters of our destiny by learning from the last 25 years. We have to seize this contingent freedom to make this real freedom, the organic freedom.

End of Evolution

Market economy is the end of the evolution of the Homo Sapiens. For a better paradigm, we will have to mutate into some other species. Though the model has yet to unfold fully, the humanity is at its best today. Certain people do oppose the model but that's only owing to the historical trap. Inputs of primitivism and medievalism in the genetic coding of many persons are disproportionate.

Limiting is Meaning

Memories make our past out of the infiniteness of the bygone and expectations make our future out of the unlimitedness of possibilities. This is the conceptual construction what we term as 'time'. This is how we situate ourselves in the infinite. This is how we attach meaning to the existence, which has no meaning otherwise.

Is discussing socio-political issues useless?

What's the use of discussing all these! Nothing is going to change. Often people at the end of discussing problems with politics and society thus exclaim in desperation. This is indeed a very sorry misconception. Social change is continuously happening and if some dimensions of it are not likable, it's only because that things have not been deliberated enough. As I'm concerned, I do see that a lot of ills afflicting us persist simply because of our sheer ignorance. A deliberating and discerning public is what we need for democracy to flourish. Every gesture, every word, the most private gossip do matter. Each of this is affected by social currents and each affects social currents. Each of us is an agent of change. And when we are on social media, our mark becomes indelible. Any word heard by another is in public domain. Only thing we need to make our deliberations more fructuous is to deliberate more.

Sometimes we feel that we have been befooled as a citizen or a consumer or a devotee or in any of our myriad roles and the people who do this to us dare to do so only because of our gullibility. The only remedy is that we must know more and we must talk more.

Civilisation and Ecology; Select Readings from the Ramacharitmanas

- Niraj Kumar Jha

Ecological crisis, which the world faces today, is essentially a civilisational issue. Ecology has been a victim of the so called civilisational progress. Mindless appropriation of nature and application of inappropriate technologies are responsible for the severe environmental imbalance which threatens the human existence today. It all began with the evolution of civilisation itself when warlike men-folk tried to defeat their likes in order to subjugate women, land and nature with the help of enslaved fellow men.
Most of the technologies meant to conquer nature are the result of the same psychological whims which impel men for aggression and war. Nature was considered as inexhaustible resource to be enjoyed endlessly by men. However, now the signs of exhaustion of the nature are clear. No metaphor can be more appropriate in saying that the global warming is the rising temperature of a fever stricken nature.  Nature is sick with exhaustion.
Civilisations except the Indic one largely did not view the nature with respect. They view mankind superior to other living beings and consider nature with its all animate and inanimate components only meant for appropriation. The approach can be understood in relation to the Christianity, which is the dominant system of faith in the world.
Christianity has distanced humanity from nature. As people come to perceive God as a singular supremacy detached from the physical world, they lost their reverence for nature. In Christian eyes, the physical world became the realm of devil. A society that had once celebrated nature through seasonal festivals began to commemorate biblical events bearing no connection to the earth.1
Nature was instead seen as the realm of the devil. The Church chose the image of Pan, the Greek god of nature, to portray the devil.2

Nature, which sustains life, deserves the highest veneration but the most civilisations treated and continue to treat nature with absolute disdain. The limitless consumerism, the immense lust to acquire and show off wealth and religious fanaticism, which blinds the practitioners to the concerns of humanism including sensitivity to nature are taking a heavy toll on ecology.
Civilisation in order to be called so must have the concern for environment inherent in its cultural norms and mores. Civilisations other than ours have treated other peoples as subhuman. While the ideal of Vasudhev Kutumbkam or the world is  a family defines our approach to humanity, other civilisations have been seeing others as lesser humans, barbarians or unbelievers unworthy of living. If their attitude towards mankind was so bizarre, the status of other living beings and inanimate objects of the nature in their eyes can easily be guessed. In fact whenever people of these civilisations got organised to become a force, they brutalised the people wherever they could go and when their knowledge reached the threshold of overcoming natural forces with the help of technology decisively, they started to vandalise nature with the same impunity.
Indian civilisation in its self-perception has viewed ecology integral to human existence. In fact technological innovations are a matter of choice. Scientific discoveries are more a matter of human inclination than natural outcome of human desire to know. Humanity still spends larger resources on innovating war machines than any thing else and the largest share of state revenues are spent on militaries and their weaponries. Future generations, if they are allowed to come, would certainly club our generation in their classification of historical times as the age of barbarians. The dividing line between barbarity and civilisation would be the day in their history when global spending on military and policing would be surpassed by the spending on education and health. The true civilisation would descend on the Earth that day only.
However civilisation cannot be seen missing on the planet altogether. Indian civilisation has been true to this civilisational credo from the beginning. Vedas, Buddhism and Jaininsm, all expounded ecological concerns. Asoka extended his humane concerns to all living beings. Here the focus is on the Ramacharitmanas of Saint Tulasidas, which is beyond doubt a civilisational epic and the text contains the civilising sutras for the whole humanity. In the very beginning of the text, Gosvami Tulasi reiterates the civilsational veneration for the every component of the creation.

Whatever beings, animate or inanimate, there are in the universe, recognising them, one an all, as consisting of Sri Rama. I ever adore the lotus feet of all with joined palms. I reverence gods, demons, human beings, Nagas, birds, spirits, manes and Gandharvas, Kinnaras and Rakshasas. Pray be gracious to me all on this occasion.3

Eight million and four hundred thousand species of living beings classified under four divisions; inhabit land, water, and the air. Recognising the entire creation as full of Sita and Rama, I make obeisance to them with joined palms.4

This is the general wisdom of the Sanatana dharma wherein all objects are seen as the reflections of the Divine alike. Every being or thing or any component or aspect of nature is part of the Divine order and so is Divine and hence is as venerable as the Divine is. If this were the approach informing the psyche of human beings, the drive for knowledge would have resulted in eco-friendly scientific studies, discoveries and technological innovations. Such drive for knowledge would fulfil both humanity and nature.
Lord Rama, who is the all powerful supreme God incarnate and has all the powers, asks his counsels and commanders how to cross the deep ocean to reach Lanka. Lord appreciates the counsel of Vibhishana who says, “Although your arrow itself can dry up innumerable oceans, yet propriety demands that You should approach the ocean and request the deity presiding over it (to allow you a passage).”  Lakshmana disapproves, “No reliance can be placed on the freaks of fortune. Fill your mind with indignation and dry up the ocean. Fate is a crutch for the mind of cowards alone; it is the indolent who proclaim their faith in fate.”  Rama laughs at Lakshmana’s words and says, “We shall do accordingly; pray, ease your mind.” Then Rama goes to the seashore, bows His head and greets the ocean and then spreading some Kusa grass gets seated on that.
This is how the Almighty treats the nature – with utmost humbleness. Similar reverence he has shown to the river Ganges and others inanimate objects. In the same episode mentioned above the god presiding over the ocean fearing the fury of the Lord states that water is dull by nature so created by the Lord himself and on its own accord it is not amenable to change.5 The message is subtle and yet clear that nature’s sanctity must be upheld. Natural elements should not be stretched or distorted against what is its basic trait. Destruction of naturalness of the nature is absolutely unwarranted.
In the whole Ramacharitmanas the Divine mission is seen as a shared mission in which different species participate and every being is bestowed with appropriate respect. The main protagonists are monkeys and bears. Vultures, otherwise considered inauspicious, play crucial role in the saga. In the final account, the description of the Ram Rajya includes ecology as its essential part.

Listen, O king of birds, (continues Kakbhusundi,) during Sri Rama’s reign there was not a creature in this world, animate or inanimate, that was liable to any of the sufferings attributable to time, past conduct, personal temperament and character.6

Trees in the forest blossomed and bore fruit throughout the year; the elephant and the lion lived together as friends. Nay, birds and beasts of every description had forgotten their natural animosities and developed friendly relations with one another. Birds sang and beasts fearlessly moved about in the woods in distinct herds, making merry all the time.7

Contrast this with the Christian tradition.

The perceived separation of nature from God affected the treatment of animals. The canonized thirteenth century scholar, Thomas Aquinas, declared that animals have no afterlife, have no inherent rights, and that “by a most just ordnance of the Creator, both their life and their death are subject to our use.”8

The Church condemned the veneration of trees and springs, where people would place candles or decorations.9

This is the civilisational approach which has resulted in environmental degradation around the globe. This approach needs to be corrected first in order to deal with the fundamental causation of the crisis. For this we need to realise the values enshrined in the Ramacharitmanas as a global way of life.
The Manas is read extensively, performed endlessly and represented in various art forms and at the same time has been the basis of the depictions of the saga of Rama in various audio-visual and electronic media. The way book is followed or cited is unparalleled. The book narrates Ramaleela, worldly deeds of the Lord Rama, the supreme God incarnate, in the finest poetry and in the language of the folk. Many of the values that this highly influential piece of poetry espouses seem somehow lost in the real life of the body politic India. The text indeed shapes the cultural norms and also influences the psyche of the people at large and yet its nobler and sublime idealism does not reflect in the national character or behaviour. Concern for environment is certainly such an issue. Despite the fact that ordinary people of the country show extraordinary veneration for flora and fauna, rivers and mountains etc. but their collective ventures in form of mindless consumerism and industrialisation has undone their basic cultural instincts. This is indeed because of the millennia of subjugation which has distorted the Indian way of life and thought and as a result they ignore their traditions which espouse humane and sustainable philosophy of life and living.
